17th October 2009 Guisborough V Chester-Le-Street
First and foremost Guisborough held a 1 minute silence for Peter Griffiths who sadly passed away this week. Our thoughts are with his family. Peter has managed to cover rugby in the Gazette for all the local sides, seniors and juniors for many years. He will be sadly missed thanks.
Guisborough entertained Chester le Street today on a fabulous October day and ran out convincing winners 107-nil. Although Guis won last week, some aspects of the game were below the standards we have set ourselves however no such luck this week. Guisborough were clinical from the first whistle to the last. Owen Edwards playing at scrum half was a thorn in Chester's forwards side all game tackling, ball distribution and powerful runs. Guis got on the score sheet straight away after the forwards drove the ball up the right hand side James Clarke gave the ball to the supporting back row Paul Towers to get the first of his two tries. From the restart Owen drove the ball back 40 metres Chester's defence were unable to get back and Mike Suthers scored in the corner. Further tries came from Josh Brown when Paul Lamb picked up from 8 fed Owen through the backs hands, Josh outpacing their winger and fullback. Macca touched down after supporting the backs scoring in the corner. From a scrum on the left James Clarke bamboozled the Chester's defence to touch down under the posts and from the re-start Owen returned the ball with venom running through the full back. Josh Brown scored his second, again having too much pace when one on one with the winger. Chester mounted an attack of their own only for Lee Richards to intercept the ball in his own half to run in unopposed. HT 59-nil.
Second half the intensity continued, the forwards drove the ball up on the right hand side, the ball was sent left and Joe Buzzy touched down as he managed a hatrick of tries in the second half. Guis didn't have it all their own way and for 10 minutes Chester were camped in our half 3 5 metre line out balls and a penalty under the posts but the defence held firm. Owen also got three more tries to make his tally 4. Young Roly Dixon came off the bench and touched down when Captain Dev held the defence and James Clarke got a further try and converted 11 of the seventeen tries. A much improved performance. Well done to Sam Watson who came in for the injured Eddie Lodge to make his debut.
Also congratulations to Guisborough 2nd's who won at Mddlesbrough and the 3rd team who won at home against Chester-Le-Street 2nds. Many of the old boys where back for the 3rds. R.Muir, Mark Bucko to name but few of the old warhorses.
